Assistant Underwriter

Avencia are partnered with a leading insurer to recruit an Assistant Underwriter within their Livestock team.

Key responsibilities

  • Solve a wide range of problems, both large and small, with a proactive approach to finding improved solutions
  • Continuously identify opportunities to enhance processes, relationships, and technology
  • Communicate effectively via phone, email, and face-to-face meetings, ensuring clear and efficient information flow
  • Adapt to a dynamic environment where priorities may shift and no two days are the same
  • Collaborate with brokers, clients, and internal teams to gather and verify information and support commercial underwriting decisions
  • Develop and implement action plans aligned with broader team and business objectives
  • Work autonomously while contributing to overall team success

Skills & experience

Essential

  • Strong problem-solving skills, particularly within a business context
  • Naturally curious mindset with a desire to understand the “why” behind data
  • Excellent communication skills across multiple platforms
  • Ability to develop and deliver plans aligned with strategic objectives
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Self-motivated with a results-driven approach
  • Strong team player with a collaborative mindset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Good standard of numeracy, including confidence working with percentages, ratios, and basic statistical concepts

Desirable

  • Experience in underwriting, broking, or claims (any class of business considered)
  • Knowledge of policy wording and contract analysis
  • Experience drafting or reviewing policy wordings
  • Track record of supporting or developing new business opportunities
