Commercial Director

About us

Avencia Consulting, part of the Oliver James Group, is a specialist Technology and Change consultancy supporting organisations through digital transformation, IT strategy, and people-led change. We are entering an exciting growth phase and are looking for a hands-on, commercially driven Commercial Director to build our consulting client base and drive net new revenue.

The role

As Commercial Director, you will take ownership of new business generation, developing senior client relationships and converting opportunities into signed consulting engagements.

You will work closely with Oliver James recruiters and account managers to unlock consulting opportunities from existing networks, while also shaping Avencia’s go-to-market strategy and commercial propositions.

Key accountabilities

New Business & Revenue Growth

  • Identify, pursue, and secure net new consulting opportunities across priority sectors.

  • Own the full sales lifecycle: lead generation, qualification, proposal development, negotiation, and close.

  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders (CEO, CIO, CFO, COO), articulating Avencia’s technology and change value proposition.

  • Build and maintain a strong, qualified pipeline with accurate CRM reporting.

Commercial Leadership

  • Deliver agreed commercial targets across qualified leads, conversions, and revenue.

  • Develop sector-specific go-to-market approaches and tailored client propositions.

  • Collaborate with the Head of Consulting on proposals, Statements of Work, and opportunity shaping.

People Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop a Business Development Consultant to drive consistent pipeline growth.

  • Set clear KPIs, conduct regular 1:1s, and support performance and capability development.

  • Act as an escalation point for complex client conversations and negotiations.

Internal & Group Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Oliver James teams to generate and convert referral opportunities.

  • Build strong internal relationships to maximise cross-group collaboration and conversion.

  • Provide market and competitor insight to support strategy and proposition development.

Market Presence

  • Represent Avencia as a brand ambassador at industry events, client meetings, and networking forums.

  • Support targeted marketing initiatives, events, and campaigns to raise brand awareness and generate leads.

Skills & experience

  • Proven track record in consultative B2B new business sales within technology, change, or professional services.

  • Experience selling complex, outcome-based consulting solutions.

  • Confident engaging and influencing senior stakeholders.

  • Commercially astute, self-motivated, and comfortable operating in a fast-growth, agile environment.
