We are working with a leading global insurer seeking a Senior Underwriter specialising in Inherent Defects Insurance (IDI) to join their Engineering & Construction team covering the UK & Ireland markets.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced underwriter to play a key role in developing a profitable IDI portfolio, building strong broker relationships, and contributing to the growth strategy of a well-established underwriting platform.
The Role
As a Senior Underwriter, you will be responsible for managing and developing a portfolio of IDI risks while supporting the wider team in delivering profitable growth. You will also play an important role in new business development, broker engagement and portfolio stratergy.
The position offers strong exposure to the London and UK markets, working closely with brokers and clients while collaborating with internal teams across underwriting, claims, risk consulting, and distribution.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite Inherent Defects Insurance (IDI) risks across the UK & Ireland markets.
- Develop and maintain a profitable portfolio of business aligned with business plan targets.
- Build and strengthen relationships with brokers and key clients across the market.
- Assess and price insurance risks, analysing exposure, loss history, and policy terms.
- Contribute to portfolio management and underwriting strategy using data, analytics, and market insight.
- Support and provide referral guidance to junior underwriters within the team.
- Identify cross-selling opportunities with other product lines and internal teams.
- Represent the business at market meetings, networking events, and industry forums.
- Maintain accurate underwriting records and contribute to internal reporting and portfolio monitoring.
- Support internal initiatives and projects aimed at improving underwriting performance and processes.
Experience Required
- 5+ years’ underwriting experience within Inherent Defects Insurance or Engineering & Construction lines.
- Strong understanding of the UK and London insurance markets.
- Proven ability to build broker relationships and develop new business opportunities.
- Solid technical underwriting capability with strong risk assessment and pricing skills.
- Good understanding of insurance policy structures, regulations, and market practices.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to use data to inform underwriting decisions.
- ACII qualified or working towards qualification (or equivalent).
