Underwriter

Avencia are partnered with a global insurer who are looking to who are looking to recruit into an established team writing complex liability risks across emerging industries, new business models, and innovative insurance solutions.

They’re looking for someone who enjoys the analytical side of underwriting, keeps close to industry trends, and is interested in assessing risks that don’t always fit neatly into traditional underwriting models.

The role combines technical underwriting with a broader commercial focus, including identifying new opportunities, working closely with brokers and clients, and helping shape the direction of the portfolio.

It’s a good opportunity for someone who enjoys problem-solving, working through nuanced risks, and being part of a team taking a more progressive approach to underwriting.

Key responsibilities

  • Underwrite and trade complex liability risks in line with underwriting authority, company strategy, and portfolio objectives.
  • Develop and maintain strong broker and client relationships, identifying new business, cross-sell, and portfolio growth opportunities.
  • Assess risks across emerging industries, evolving business models, and innovative insurance solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across underwriting, wordings, and international teams to deliver a high level of service to brokers and clients.
  • Manage and deliver customer and broker propositions, including global programme coordination and service level agreements.
  • Prepare, review, and approve underwriting documentation and policy wordings where required.
  • Monitor market, regulatory, and industry developments to support underwriting decisions and identify emerging opportunities and trends.
  • Support wider team initiatives and contribute to internal projects, forums, and collaborative business activities.
  • Analyse and identify opportunities within new technologies, products, and developing market segments.
  • Maintain a commercial and forward-thinking approach to underwriting, staying informed on emerging risks and changing market dynamics.

Skills & experience

  • Liability underwriting or broking experience.
  • CII qualified or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting principles, policy construction, and insurance terminology.
  • Ability to assess risks, make informed underwriting decisions, and tailor solutions to client needs.
  • Commercially minded with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with brokers, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented approach with the ability to work across international teams.
  • Organised, self-motivated, and able to manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and meeting deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel where required.
