The successful candidate will combine strong technical underwriting expertise with strong broker and client relationship management skills and a passion for developing long-term partnerships.

The role

As Underwriting Manager, you will be responsible for underwriting and developing a profitable portfolio of livestock business whilst contributing to the strategic direction of the product offering.

Working collaboratively with colleagues across underwriting, operations, legal, compliance and analytics, you will help drive profitable growth, support product innovation, and strengthen the organisation’s market presence.

You will act as a recognised technical specialist within the business, providing guidance on complex risks, policy wordings and coverage structures while developing strong broker and client relationships.

Key accountabilities

Portfolio & Underwriting Management

  • Underwrite, review, peer-review and service, profitable new business and renewals for the Livestock account.
  • Develop and manage a profitable livestock portfolio in line with business objectives.
  • Assess risk exposure, pricing adequacy and coverage structures.
  • Analyse portfolio performance and identify opportunities to improve profitability.

Broker & Market Relationships

  • Build and strengthen relationships with brokers and clients.
  • Identify and secure new business opportunities within appetite.
  • Promote the livestock proposition across the market.
  • Deliver a high standard of service and responsiveness to trading partners.

Technical Leadership

  • Provide subject matter expertise on livestock risks and coverage.
  • Support the development and enhancement of policy wordings and products.
  • Act as a referral point for complex underwriting and technical matters.
  • Share knowledge and mentor less experienced colleagues where appropriate.

Strategy & Innovation

  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the livestock offering.
  • Identify market trends, risks and growth opportunities.
  • Support product innovation and portfolio development initiatives.
  • Represent the business at industry events, market meetings and working groups.

Risk, Reporting & Governance

  • Maintain strong underwriting discipline and governance standards.
  • Monitor portfolio exposures and risk aggregation.
  • Produce and analyse portfolio and management information.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and internal underwriting requirements.

Skills & experience

  • Significant underwriting experience within Livestock Insurance.
  • Strong technical knowledge of livestock products, coverage and policy structures.
  • Demonstrable experience developing profitable portfolios.
  • Experience supporting or mentoring junior underwriters.
  • Established relationships with brokers and clients in the London and/or international insurance markets.
  • Proven track record of generating and retaining business.
  • Strong understanding of portfolio management and underwriting analytics.
  • The ability to build credibility with brokers, clients and internal stakeholders.
  • A proactive approach to market engagement and business development.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across functions.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Microsoft Office skills.
